Genesis - On Trading Concert Shows

What is the policy for trading live recordings?:

We are aware that trading and sharing live recordings is an important part of the Genesis fan experience. All we ask is that all recordings must be used for personal use or trading only. Selling or commercializing any recording is illegal and will jeopardize trading privileges for everyone.

Please stay tuned for more details on the evolution of this policy.

Ian Gillan - Bootlegs & Pirates

Bootlegs & pirates

Bootlegs - I have no real problem with tapes of live shows being circulated, bought and sold, amongst real fans. The same goes for photographs, videos and so on.

I live in the sure knowledge that bootlegging at this level is fun and effectively harmless to the record companies; who are always complaining about their profits being hit. I'm also certain that the vast majority of fans will already have all the legitimate recordings of their favourite artists.

However, I must say that my opinion of bootleggers (ie. the corporate criminals as they have become) has reached an all time low. The innocence has gone and the glut of 'product' has ensured a diminution of long term value for these once rare and precious recordings.

The bootleggers, nevertheless, however cynical and manipulative, are still dealing in stuff that the public has already paid for; and, with that in mind, I maintain that every concert goer should be entitled to take home their own recordings of the show. They've bought the ticket and that's that. No restrictions, enjoy the show.

Pirates - as for pirates. Well, you know what they deal in. Studio recordings and rip-off merchandise. They're just thieves, dealing in stolen property.

I would like to strip them of their romantic name. Let them fly under their true colours. They are not pirates, they are thieves, and their tainted offerings have bad Karma
.

Use your judgement.

Ian Gillan

As a footnote I should say this is merely my opinion and I must emphasise that I do not speak for the other guys in D.P., or anyone else.

* the definition of 'oxymoron' may be found in the dictionary of your choice.

Grateful Dead - Taping The Shows

Tapers

The Grateful Dead allowed their fans to tape their shows like several other bands during the time.

For many years the tapers set up their microphones wherever they could. The eventual forest of microphones became a problem for the official sound crew. Eventually this was solved by having a dedicated taping section located behind the soundboard, which required a special "tapers" ticket.

The band allowed sharing of tapes of their shows, as long as no profits were made on the sale of their show tapes. Recently, there was some dispute over what recordings archive.org could host on their site. Currently, all recordings are hosted, though soundboard recordings are not available for download, rather in a streaming format.

Give it a REST, only bands that LOVE fans allow this sort of thing............

NO PROFIT, NO SALE, ONLY GOOD TUNZ!!!!

SOME BANDS LOVE US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jack Johnson - On Bootlegs

About Bootlegs

Johnson has stated in several interviews that a big part of his success involved his friends recording "bootlegs" of his tracks and distributing them at surf competitions. Johnson has also stated that he supports the sharing of live recordings and bootlegs of his music, many of which can be found all over the internet.

Johnson QUOTE:

"It's pretty crazy. There's stuff I would find online that I'd only given to one friend, so I know how it got there," Johnson says. "It's been a spider-web effect. That's the whole reason all this [success] started. I'm sure there's lots of people who hate [downloading], but I really dig it."

Flipping aye: another artist promoting it!

Joe Bonamassa - Another ARTIST allowing bootleggers to record concerts!

Official Joe Bonamassa Taping Policy

"Except where prohibited by venue regulations or a headlining act on a multi-act show, Joe Bonamassa generally allows audio taping and still photography at his live performances. No soundboard feeds will be given and it is the responsibility of audio tapers to bring their own equipment. Still photographers will not be given access to any areas beyond those granted on their ticket. Notwithstanding this policy, all persons attending a performance must comply with the rules and regulations of the venue hosting the performance.

Any and all audio recordings and still photography taped/taken at a live show may be used solely for non-commercial purposes. Any and all audio recordings and still photography taped/taken at a live show shall be considered "works-made-for-hire" for Premier Artists Services within the meaning of the Copyright Act of 1976 and Premier Artists Services will own the copyright and all other rights in and to the work. Selling any audio recording or still photographs taped/taken at shows is illegal and will jeopardize other fans' taping and still photography privileges. Video taping performances is prohibited without the express written consent of artist management. This policy is subject to change at any time without notice so please check www.jbonamassa.com for changes.

While it is not mandatory, Joe would love to hear your audio recordings and see your still photos of his shows. If possible, please send him copies (audio and data CDs only) to: Joe Bonamassa, c/o Premier Artists Services, 2555 Panther Parkway, Sunrise, FL 33323. Please mark all packages as FOR THE ARCHIVES. Packages will not be returned."

Joe isn't the only one, just like "The Dead" and all the way to Jack Johnson......many performers love their fans. They want us to have QUALITY performances to enjoy! Van Morrison hates us to share his stuff, but others like it...............let us ENJOY the artists who do. Share! Share! AND SHARE!
